Hering challenged the color-vision theory of Hermann von Helmholtz. Ewald Hering's color-opponent-theory is still considered one of the foundations of the visual sciences. Prior to Hering, Hermann v. Helmholtz introduced a theory of color appearance, which was based primarily on the physical aspects of the stimulus. In contrast to Helmholtz, Hering's theory strongly emphasized the subject's perception of color. Ewald Hering's color-opponent-theory is still considered one of the foundations of the visual sciences.
Karl Ewald Konstantin Hering (August 5, 1834 – January 26, 1918) was a German physiologist who did much research into color vision, binocular perception and eye movements.He proposed opponent color theory in 1892.. Born in Alt-Gersdorf, Kingdom of Saxony, Hering studied at the University of Leipzig and became a professor at Charles University in Prague. Heinrich Ewald Hering (Figure (Figure1) 1) was born on May 3, 1866 in Vienna to renowned physiologist Ewald Hering, the rector of the German University in Prague [1-2]. The younger Hering became interested in cardiovascular physiology as a result of Czermak’s self-experiment on the negative chronotropic effects of the vagus nerve on the heart published in 1866 [ 2 ].
